Celiac Mentor Program

Celiac community and supporters,
celiac mentor program
Hi! My name is Brynne. I have celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide.

When I was first diagnosed, I was devastated. I stood in front of my pantry hungry and wondering what to eat. I lost 7 pounds in the first week. At the time, I did not know anyone else with the disease. Though my family and friends did their best to support me, I felt completely lost.

Years later, I’ve successfully adapted to life with celiac disease and the gluten-free diet. I’ve documented my journey at glutenfreehungrygal.com, and I’ve gained so much knowledge since being diagnosed.

I did some research on my blog and found others have had similar experiences. 82% of people said it would have been beneficial to know someone with celiac disease when they were diagnosed, and 94% of people said they would be “very” or “somewhat” willing to mentor someone newly diagnosed with celiac disease.

This is why I’ve decided to establish a non-profit, nationwide Celiac Mentor Program. The program will match celiacs who have years of experience (mentors) with newly diagnosed celiacs (mentees) based on age, location and other similarities.

The Celiac Mentor Program is different from support groups that are already availiable. This program will facilitate one-on-one connections between folks with celiac disease, to ensure each participant gets the kind of personal attention they need to cope and adjust, provide rewarding relationships for both the mentor and mentee.

Your support will help this organization get off the ground. Funding will contribute to the filing fee for a 501c3, the purchase and design of a website, T-shirts for mentor and mentees, promotions during the launch and more.

Whether you’re a newly diagnosed celiac, someone diagnosed years ago, or family or friend of someone with celiac disease, you know how challenging the transition to a gluten-free lifestyle can be. Join me in forming a community focused on helping one another and reducing the frustration and anxiety that comes with this disease.
