Pizza Hut Gluten-Free Reviews

If you have to follow a gluten-free diet, then you will know that eating out isn’t always the easiest task.

Around 1% of the population in the USA suffers from celiac disease, yet many restaurants and fast food chains offer little to no gluten-free options.

Pizza Hut is a chain that does offer gluten-free options, but this has only happened in recent years.

Previously, Pizza Hut was just like many restaurants that did not offer any safe options for their gluten-free customers.

But times have changed, and now it is becoming more common for food stores to offer gluten-free options.

But just because restaurants are offering gluten-free food, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it is any good.

In this guide we’ll be reviewing the gluten-free options at Pizza Hut to decide if they are worth it, or not.

Pizza Hut Gluten-Free Reviews

What Gluten-Free Options Do Pizza Hut Offer?

Well, first things first, let’s take a look at the gluten-free options that Pizza Hut offers.

Of course, most pizza bases include gluten in their design, so a lot of the options at Pizza Hut are off limits to gluten-free customers.

This is why it was so important that the company introduced gluten-free options.

Pizza Hut first introduced a gluten-free option to their menu back in 2015/16. This gluten-free option was a pizza base, and traditionally it could only be ordered with 2 different toppings.

These were pepperoni, and cheese-only. The pizza base was only available in a 10-inch option, but it gave gluten-free customers a safe option that they had never had before.

You would’ve expected the company to expand their gluten-free options since then, but this isn’t actually the case.

Across the pond, Pizza Hut restaurants have also introduced a gluten-free dessert, but in the USA, the gluten-free options on the menu are still limited to the gluten-free pizza base.

However, since 2016, the options that you have with this gluten-free base have expanded, and you can now add different toppings to your pizza. You are not limited to just cheese or pepperoni.

Some people expect the salad bar at Pizza Hut to be gluten-free, but because of cross-contamination, this isn’t actually the case.

So aside from gluten-free drinks, such as Pepsi, the only gluten-free option that you have at Pizza Hut is this Pizza Base.

So now that we’ve established what the gluten-free option at Pizza Hut is, let’s review it.

Size

When it comes to pizza, one of the most important things that you likely care about is the size of that pizza. One of the best things about Pizza Hut is that you can choose the size of your pizza.

So, if you want a snack-sized pizza, you can order a smaller option, or if you want a huge pizza, you can get that too. So is this an option with the gluten-free base?

When the gluten-free pizza base was first added to the Pizza Hut menu, it was only available in one size. This was 10-inches, which is pretty much the equivalent of a small pizza on the regular menu.

You probably would have expected the size options to increase in the years since the gluten-free base entered the menu, but this hasn’t happened.

Unfortunately, you can still only get a 10-inch gluten-free pizza from Pizza Hut.

Sometimes, the limitations that you have in terms of size will not be a problem.

For example, if you are the only person who follows a gluten-free diet in your house, then this size pizza could be perfect to avoid waste.

But, if there are multiple people who follow a gluten-free diet in your house, then the size could quickly become a problem.

Instead of ordering 1 or 2 large pizzas, you might find yourself having to order up to 4 gluten-free pizzas to feed your family. So, the cost will quickly add up.

Final Thoughts: The fact that this pizza is only available in one size option (10-inches) is a clear drawback for Pizza Hut.

Shape

When you think of pizza, most people think of round pizza because this is the way in which pizza is usually served.

However, if you order the gluten-free pizza from Pizza Hut, you might be alarmed when your order leaves the kitchen because this pizza is not round.

Instead, Pizza Hut offers a square gluten-free base.

You might be wondering to yourself “why change the shape?”, and there is one straight-forward answer for this.

Almost all pizzas are served in a round shape, and this is actually why Pizza Hut designed their gluten-free bases to be square.

In the kitchen, it is incredibly important to differentiate between regular and gluten-free bases, and the easiest way to do this is to make sure they look different from one another.

This is why Pizza Hut made their GF bases square.

On a surface level, the shape of your pizza doesn’t really matter. Its shape will not impact the flavor of your pizza, nor will it impact your ability to enjoy the pizza.

Despite this, the fact that the gluten-free pizza at Pizza Hut is served in a square shape does bother some people. There is something unnatural about it, and this is why some people struggle with it.

But, for us, the reason this pizza is square shaped totally justifies changing such an integral thing about the classic pizza.

Final Thoughts: For some people, a square pizza isn’t ideal. But, it was very clever for Pizza Hut to change the shape of this pizza, and ultimately it does not impact your enjoyment.

Flavor

The things that we have looked at so far definitely matter, but one of the most important things when it comes to pizza is the flavor of the base.

So, let’s take a look at how Pizza Hut’s gluten-free weighs up in terms of flavor.

A lot of gluten-free pizza bases do not taste that great.

This is just a simple fact, and it isn’t restricted to pizza bases, overall a lot of gluten-free options do not taste as great as their gluten-included counterparts.

But, thankfully, Pizza Hut is an exception to this rule because their gluten-free pizza base tastes great!

Sometimes, when it comes to “gluten-free” products, you can definitely taste the lack of gluten in it. But, this isn’t the case for Pizza Hut’s gluten-free base.

In fact, this base doesn’t taste that different from their regular pizza bases.

Most gluten-free bases will not turn golden, or crisp up once cooked, but the Pizza Hut gluten-free base does, and it is such a blessing.

While the gluten-free options at Pizza Hut are definitely limited, the flavor of this base definitely makes up for it.

Very few restaurants manage to nail the gluten-free base, but Pizza Hut is definitely one of them.

Final Thoughts: The flavor and consistency of their gluten-free base is definitely a pro for Pizza Hut.

Adaptability And Accessibility

As we have said, the gluten-free options at Pizza Hut were once only available with cheese and pepperoni toppings.

But, now you have a lot more freedom when it comes to toppings on your gluten-free pizza at Pizza Hut. Unfortunately, due to the risk of cross-contamination, none of these toppings are GIG certified.

But below we have given you just a handful of some of the toppings that are safe to eat:

Sauces:

  • Classic marinara pizza sauce

Vegetables:

  • Roma tomatoes
  • Mushrooms
  • Jalapeño peppers
  • Black olives
  • Pineapple
  • Red onions

Meat:

  • Ham
  • Pork
  • Chicken
  • Bacon
  • Beef
  • Pepperoni

So as you can see, there is a lot of adaptability and customization available when it comes to the create-your-own gluten-free pizza at Pizza Hut. But what about accessibility?

In terms of accessibility, the gluten-free pizza base at Pizza Hut is now available in almost all Pizza Hut stores across the USA. The only time that this pizza base will not be available is if it is out of stock.

At certain times, Pizza Hut will remove the gluten-free pizza base option off of their online menu, and this is because it is currently out of stock. However, it normally does not disappear for that long.

Final Thoughts: Access to the Pizza Hut gluten-free pizza, and the topping options that are available, are both great. So, we would say that Pizza Hut succeeds in this category.

What Are Our Final Thoughts?

Now that we have taken a look at some of the key things that dictate how good/bad the gluten-free options are, let’s sum it up.

Pizza Hut only offers the one gluten-free option in the USA, and for us this is a major drawback.

Around 1% of the US population suffers from celiac disease, and so restaurants really need to step up their game when it comes to their gluten-free menus.

That being said, the one saving-grace of this limitation is that the one option that they do offer is outstanding

Yes, it is smaller than we would like, but Pizza Hut’s gluten-free base crisps up unlike any other, and it is always golden brown and delicious.

This, combined with the fact that you have lots of different options to choose from when it comes to toppings, has drawn us to the conclusion that the gluten-free options at Pizza Hut are great.

Even if they are limited.
